Workshop 2 – Compression and practical tips for managing problematic lower legs

Managing complex lower leg conditions in Hospital in the Home (HITH) settings presents ongoing challenges, particularly where oedema, skin breakdown, leakage, and recurrent infection contribute to patient deterioration and risk of hospital admission. This workshop is designed to build clinician confidence in recognising and managing problematic lower legs, with a focus on practical, evidence-based strategies.

The session will begin with an overview of lower leg skin failure, exploring the underlying causes of breakdown, including serous fluid leakage, ulceration, and microbial burden. Participants will then examine strategies for turning failure into success, focusing on the critical role of oedema management and compression therapy in improving patient outcomes. Key considerations such as vascular assessment, contraindications, and compression options will be discussed, alongside brief considerations for wound management and antimicrobial use.

A core component of the workshop is the hands-on compression session, where participants will gain practical experience applying different compression systems. This interactive approach aims to translate knowledge into confidence, equipping clinicians to safely implement compression in the community and support improved outcomes while reducing the risk of escalation to hospital care.

Times:
Lunch – 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Workshop – 1:00pm – 5:00pm

Location: Grand Ballroom 3, Hotel Grand Chancellor

Lunch and afternoon tea will be served for all attendees.
